IUPUI defeats Centre in swimming and diving
Competing in its second weekend of the season, the Centre College men's and women's swimming and diving teams lost to Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) 173-121 on the men's side and 152-131 on the women's side, Friday, Oct. 19, in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Colonels won 12 of the 32 events on the evening against the NCAA Division I member, including five individual wins and a relay win for both the men and women. In six of those wins, Centre not only won the event, but also had the second place finisher as well.
A pair of freshmen, Brent Bowman (Allison Park, Penn.) and Hunter Owen (Knoxville, Tenn.) paced the men's team with two wins each. Bowman finished first in the 1,000-yard Freestyle (10:15.23) and the 500-yard Freestyle (5:00.20), while Owen was first in both the 100-yard Butterfly (55.23) and the 200-yard IM (2:09.96).
Junior Brad Erickson (Owensboro, Ky.) won the 100-yard Breaststroke and the 400-yard Freestyle Relay team of seniors Alex Brown (Somerset, Ky.) and Pat Ley (Louisville, Ky.), sophomore Matt Kaufman (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Ronnie Phillips (Henderson, Ky.) also placed first with a time of 3:25.94.
On the women's side, four swimmers won multiple events, led by sophomore Alice Fleet's (Franklin, Tenn.) two individual wins. Fleet won the 1,000-yard Freestyle with a time of 11:18.99 and the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:25.09.
Sophomore Sadie Allen (Omaha, Neb.) was first in the 200-yard Freestyle (2:00.79). Sophomore Meredith Angel (Campbellsville, Ky.) won the 50-yard Freestyle (25.53) and freshman Caroline Stephens (Louisville, Ky.) finished first in the 100-yard Freestyle (56.40).
Allen, Angel and Stephens then teamed up with senior Jillian Dove (Lexington, Ky.) to win the 400-yard Freestyle relay with a time of 3:46.85.
The Colonels, now 0-3, will next compete against the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Saturday, Oct. 20 in Terre Haute, Ind.
