Colonels earn first swimming and diving wins
Swimming against a former Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) member, the Centre College men's and women's swimming and diving teams picked up its first wins of the season defeating the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Saturday, Oct. 20 in Terre Haute, Ind.
The Colonels won a season-high 17 events on the day, with eight coming in the men's 127-104 win and nine in the women's 135-57 victory.
The women's team had four multiple-event winners led by senior Emily Anderson's (Louisville, Ky.) two individual wins. Anderson placed first in both the 200-yard IM (2:27.81) and the 100-yard Butterfly (1:02.85).
Anderson was also part of the winning 200-yard Medley Relay team (1:57.39) which consisted of sophomores Meredith Angel (Campbellsville, Ky.) and Alice Fleet (Franklin, Tenn.) and freshman Caroline Stephens (Louisville, Ky.).
Sophomore Sadie Allen (Omaha, Neb.) was a double winner placing first in both the 200-yard Freestyle (2:03.75) and the 100-yard Freestyle (56:25).
Along with being on the winning relay team, Angel and Fleet also recorded individual wins. Angel finished first in the 5-yard Freestyle (25.30), while Fleet won the 100-yard Backstroke (1:02.84).
Also earning wins on the day was freshman Kyla Schneiders (Danville, Ky.) in the 1,000-yard Freestyle (11:54.26) and senior Deming Williams (Danville, Ky.) in the 500-yard Freestyle (5:42.41).
The men's team also had a good day with four multiple-event winners as well. Freshman Brent Bowman (Allison Park, Penn.) continues to swim well in the early going, winning two individual events and helping the 200-yard Medley Relay team to another win.
Bowman won the 1,000-yard Freestyle with a time of 10:31.69 and later returned to finish first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.20. The freshman was joined by junior Brad Erickson (Owensboro, Ky.), sophomore Matt Kaufman (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Owen Hunter (Knoxville, Tenn.) on the winning relay team which finished with a time of 1:41.98.
Owen also earned a win in the 200-yard IM (2:05.34), while sophomore Hunter Hayes (Hopkinsville, Ky.) and freshman Drew Anderson (Fresno, Calif.) recorded two individual wins each.
Hayes won both the 1-meter Diving event (250.50) and the 3-meter Diving event (236.55), while Anderson placed first in the 200-yard Freestyle (1:52.99) and the 500-yard Freestyle (5:08.76).
Centre will next take part in the Gold and White Inter squad Friday, Oct. 26 before traveling to Lexington, Va. to compete against Washington & Lee University, Saturday, Nov. 3. |
