Swimming and diving teams third at SCAC Championships
For the second consecutive year, the Centre College men's and women's swimming and diving teams have placed third out of nine schools at the 2008 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Swimming Championships held Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 13-16 in Southlake, Texas.
The men's team scored 741 points to finish behind only DePauw University (1st, 877) and Trinity University (2nd, 783), while the women's team scored 676 points to also finish behind Trinity (1st, 910) and DePauw (2nd, 750).
On the men's side, the Colonels had two individuals and one relay team earn conference championships. Freshman Hunter Owen (Knoxville, Tenn.) set a school record by winning the 200 IM (1:55.87) and fellow freshman Brent Bowman (Allison Park, Pa.) also set a school record by winning the 1650-yard Freestyle (16:26.44).
Owen then joined juniors Michael Henry (Maryville, Tenn.), Brad Erickson (Owensboro, Ky.) and Jimmy Tatgenhorst (Knoxville, Tenn.) to win the 400-yard Medley Relay (3:31.26).
Owen also earned all-conference accolades in the 100-yard Butterfly (3rd, 51.77) and the 200-yard Butterfly (2nd, 1:55.82). Bowman was all-SCAC in the 500-yard Freestyle (3rd, 4:43.73) and the 400-yard IM (2nd, 4:15.89). Tatgenhorst was all-league in the 200-Freestyle (3rd, 1:45.04), while Erickson earned All-SCAC honors in the 100-yard Breaststroke (3rd, 59.31) and Henry in both the 100 (3rd, 54.88) and the 200-yard Backstroke (2nd, 1:58.10).
Also earning all-SCAC honors for Centre on the men's side were freshman Drew Anderson (Fresno, Calif.) in the 500 (2nd, 4:42.17) and the 1650-yard Freestyle (3rd, 16:55.65), sophomore Hunter Hayes (Hopkinsville, Ky.) in the 1 (2nd, 478.20) and 3-meter (2nd, 511.50) Diving events. The 800-Freestyle Relay team (3rd, 7:09.32) also earned all-conference accolades.
Sophomore Meredith Angel (Campbellsville, Ky.) earned a conference championship in the 50-Freestyle (24.02) and was also all-conference in the 50 and 100-yard Breaststroke (2nd, 1:07.38) for the women's team.
Junior Elizabeth Starr (Westchester, Ohio) earned all-SCAC honors in the 100 (3rd, 1:00.26) and 200-yard Butterfly (3rd, 2:11.49). Sophomore Amber Lyvers (Elizabethtown, Ky.) was all-conference in the 200-yard Butterfly (2nd, 2:11.30) and freshman Caroline Stephens (Louisville, Ky.) was all-league in the 200-Freestyle (2nd, 1:58.56).
The women's team also picked up all-conference awards in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay (2nd, 1:37.66), 200-yard Medley Relay (2nd, 1:51.39) and the 400-yard Medley Relay (3rd, 4:05.89).
The Centre men and women combined to break 14 school records in the Championships and head coach Dean Brownley and assistant coach Sarah Holman were named the SCAC Coaching Staff of the Year for their efforts with the women's team.
Hayes, Angel and the women's 200-yard Freestyle Relay team have all qualified for Nationals and will now wait to see if they will be named to the 2008 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships Field. |
