Swimming and Diving News

Competing in historic Lexington, Va., the Centre College men's and women's swim teams split against Washington & Lee University with the women winning 141-121 and the men falling 161-96 to the Generals, Saturday, Nov. 6.

The women's team won eight of the 14 events, including both relays and six individual events. The foursome of senior Emily Anderson (Louisville, Ky.) and sophomores Ana McMurtry (Fort Wright, Ky.), Meredith Angel (Campbellsville, Ky.) and Sadie Allen (Omaha, Neb.) opened the meet by winning the 200-yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:55.36.

The Centre women also won the 400-yard Freestyle Relay as senior Jillian Dove (Lexington, Ky.) and freshman Caroline Stephens (Louisville, Ky.) teamed up with Angel and Allen to post a time of 3:44.48. In winning the relay, the Colonels set a new pool record, which had stood since 1984.

Angel and Allen also earned two individual wins apiece. Angel won both the 50-yard Freestyle (24.92) and the 100-yard Freestyle, while Allen finished first in both the 200-yard Freestyle (1:59.97) and the 500-yard Freestyle (5:26.81).

Anderson won the 100-yard Butterfly with a time of 1:01.87 and junior Caitlin Rhodes (Louisville, Ky.) picked up a win in the 200-yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:36.62.

The men's team won only two events on the day. Freshman Brent Bowman (Allison Park, Penn.) won the 1,000-yard Freestyle with a time of 10:15.95 and fellow freshman Hunter Owen (Knoxville, Tenn.) won the 100-yard Butterfly with a time of 54.14.

"It was definitely the most exciting meet of the season," Centre head coach Dean Brownley said. "I'm very pleased with the effort from both the men's and women's teams today."

Centre will return to action Friday, Nov. 9 when it hosts a tri-meet with Warren Wilson College and Bellarmine University. The meet is set to start at 7 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
