Women second, men third at conference championships
The Centre College men's and women's swimming and diving teams brought home the bronze and silver respectively at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Association 2009 Championships held in Nashville Tenn. on February 11-14.
Between both the men's and women's teams the Colonels hit over 40 national qualifying times during the three day event. This includes two automatic qualifying times, both by Meredith Angel, one in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:04.2) and the other in the 50 yard freestyle (23.42). The two teams also combined to break 27 school records and 12 conference records.
The women combined for 11 first place finishes (including winning all five relays), three second place finishes and five third place finishes en route to scoring 789 total points, 76 points out of first place. The women also had four swimmers in the top 11 point getters;
Meredith Angel (top point getter with 60),
Lis Starr (third with 57),
Colleen Maggard (sixth with 50), and
Amber Lyvers (eleventh with 46). With her high point total Angel was named the SCAC Female swimmer of the year. (click here to hear her interview)
