Men's and Women's Tennis teams finish seasons with wins

The Centre College men's and women's tennis teams both closed out their 2006 seasons with wins Saturday, April 29, in the SCAC Championships held in Sewanee, Tenn.

After both teams lost opening matches on Friday, they battled back to easily win their matches on Saturday. The women, seeded fifth, defeated eighth-seeded Millsaps 7-2. The win advanced the Colonels to the fifth-place match against seventh-seeded Hendrix, but the match was cancelled due to inclement weather. The men, seeded sixth, also advanced to the fifth-place match, as they defeated seventh-seeded Hendrix 6-1. Like the women, their next match was also cancelled because of weather.

The Centre women had three seniors competing in their final collegiate matches. Seniors Laura Walters (London, Ky.) and Abby Barbiche (Monteagle, Tenn.) teamed together in #2 doubles for an 8-4 win. Nicole Dukes (Woodbridge, Va.), the other senior, dominated her match at #2 singles, defeating her opponent 6-0,6-0. Barbiche also won at #3 singles in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-2. Walters got the win at #4 singles, pulling out the first set 7-5 before winning the second easily 6-0.

The Centre men lost only one match in their defeat of Hendrix, sweeping the doubles matches in the process. Centre's lone senior, Bennett Clark (Danville, Ky.), ended his career with a couple of wins while playing in the most exciting match of the day. Clark squared off at #4 singles against Ryan Strickland of Hendrix. After Clark won the first set 6-2, Strickland evened the match at a set apiece, winning the second 6-3. Clark regrouped in the third, finally closing out the match 6-4. Clark also teamed with Doug Arnold (Versailles, Ky.) in #2 doubles for a 8-4 win.

Neither team was able to win a match in the first round, as the men fell to nationally-ranked and third-seeded Sewanee 7-0 while the women were downed by fourth-seeded Rhodes 9-0.

The Centre women closed out their 2006 campaign with a record of 10-9 while the men finished their season 9-11. With the majority of their players coming back next year, the teams will expect continued improvement in 2006-2007.
