Centre Men Lose Close Match to Bellarmine
The Centre College men's tennis team fell to Bellarmine University this past Saturday, March 10 by a score of 5-4. Bellarmine won two out of the three doubles matches to gain a 2-1 lead over the Colonels. The senior team of Lon Hays/Danny Schmidt won at #1 doubles, defeating Cheng/Royer 8-3.
In singles play, Schmidt lost a tough match to Janssen 6-4, 6-2 while freshman Brenton Deal fell to Royer at the #6 spot, 6-2, 6-3. Down 4-1, the Colonels had to win the rest of the matches to clinch the tie. Seniors Hays and Hari Vasupuram each pulled out solid wins at the #3 and #4 positions, respectively. At the #5 spot, sophomore Barrett Freeman toughed out a 7-5, 7-5 win over Mitchell despite being down 2-5 in both sets. With Freeman's victory, Centre was now tied with Bellarmine 4-4 with junior Doug Arnold on court. After splitting the first two sets at #2, Arnold succumbed to Matthews 6-1 in the third and deciding set, giving Bellarmine the 5-4 victory.
The Colonels, now 1-2 on the year, next face Union College on Thursday, March 15 in Danville , KY for their first home match.
