Men's Tennis Opens with Convincing Win
The Centre College men's tennis team started its 2007 season with a convincing victory over the University of Charleston, WV 8-1, Saturday, March 3, in Charleston , WV
Centre got the match started by sweeping all three doubles matches, to take a 3-0 lead. The senior team of Lon Hays/Danny Schmidt at #1 doubles and the #2 doubles pair of Hari Vasupuram/Doug Arnold were never threatened in their victories of 8-6 and 8-5 over Bumgarner/Hughes and Machado/Lilly, respectively. At #3 doubles, Barrett Freeman/Brenton Deal fought hard to close out their match against Turner/Silva, eventually winning 9-7.
In singles play, the Colonels won five out of the six matches to clinch the tie, suffering its lone loss at #1 singles. At the #2 position, junior Doug Arnold was extremely solid in easing past Lilly 6-1, 6-1, serving up just one double fault through the whole match. Hays, playing his first collegiate match since the conference tournament last year, pulled away from Hughes at the #3 spot to triumph 6-4, 6-0. Senior Hari Vasupuram took down Machado at #4 singles, 6-0, 6-1, while Freeman beat Romano 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Brenton Deal capped off the victory with a smooth 6-1, 6-1 victory over Turner to begin his collegiate career on a very positive note.
