Men finish seventh at SCAC tournament
The Centre College men's tennis team finished 7 th out of the 11 teams at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Association (SCAC) Tournament the weekend of April 24-26 in Little Rock, AR. The men played four team matches in temperatures approaching 90 degrees in the three day tournament. The Colonels got the weekend started in an important and exciting first round match-up with Hendrix College. Centre jumped on top 2-1 after the doubles with Ben Newstadt and Barrett Freeman winning at #1 8-4 and Kit Brunner and Micah Roberts squeaking out a critical victory #3 doubles. Kit Brunner then cruised to a win at #5 singles. Brenton Deal followed with a second set tie-breaker victory at #3 to tie the match up at 4 all. Kurt Hage finished the win for Centre with a close third set win at #6. The Colonels had to come back and play two hours later against #1 ranked DePauw. The Colonels were no match for the Tigers as they cruised to a 9-0 victory.
The Saturday match-up had the Colonels facing Oglethorpe and a shot at finishing in the top half of the conference. Oglethorpe proved too strong for Centre as they swept the singles. Brenton Deal and Kurt Hage were able to capture a victory at #2 doubles to prevent the Colonels from being blanked. On Sunday the men faced Southwestern for the seventh place match. Ben Newstadt and Barrett Freeman jumped out with a victory at #1 doubles but the #'s 2 and 3 lost to put the Colonels down 2-1. Newstadt and Freeman again won in singles to put Centre up 3-2 before Southwestern captured the #4 singles to tie the match at 3 all. Kurt Hage followed with a win at #6 singles while Brenton Deal and Kit Brunner were going into third sets at #3 and #5. Both Deal and Brunner were able to squeak out wins to account for the 6-3 victory for Centre.
