Rhodes College Open opens with tough competition
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Centre College track & field teams began their spring break by traveling to Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. Both teams had some outstanding performances against a class field that boasted Division I and II schools from Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi along with powerhouse Division III Calvin College.
In the 5,000 meter run, senior Eric Hack (‘07) and sophomore Chase Wilson (‘09) battled against the heart of Calvin's Division III Cross Country National Championship team as they both finished in the top ten. Both men posted season best times as Hack out-leaned Wilson at the line (15:36.5 to 15:36.8). Adam Clark (‘07) jumped well, finishing third in the high jump (5'11). Kevin Phelps (‘07) continued to show promise as he placed sixth in the Javelin bettering his personal best by over ten feet (157' 10”).
Two-time All-American Eileen Schilling (‘07) finished strong in the 5,000 meter run, splitting up what would have been a first through sixth sweep by Calvin College. Her time ( 18:32 ) ranks her first in the latest SCAC standings. Ines Kevric (‘07) was just shy of cracking the top ten against a competitive field, despite running her personal best. Kevric's time ( 4:54 ) was just six seconds off the school record and ranks her first in the last SCAC standings. Freshman Abby Jurewicz (‘10) continued to demonstrate her ability in the triple jump as she placed fourth with a jump of 33‘10” that was a mere four inches shy of Centre's school record.
The Centre College track & field teams will compete in two weeks at the Emory Classic Invitational in Atlanta , Ga. 30-31 March 2007.
