Centre Men Third, Women Fifth, Kevric sets two school records at the SCAC Championships.
SAN ANTONIO, Tx. - April 27-28 the track and field teams traveled to San Antonio, Tx. to compete at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Trinity University. The men's team finished third, one point higher than fourth place Rhodes, while the women's team finished fifth.
Ines Kevric ('07) led the women's team in scoring with 18 points, nearly a third of the team's total points. Kevric dominated the 800 meter dash, winning by nearly four seconds. Her time (2:16.57) establishes a new school record for that event. Kevric replaces former track standout Debbie Finke (‘95) as she took down Finke's twelve year record. Kevric's record setting performance came only hours after she finished second in the 1500m run. Kevric's time in the event ( 4:42 ) betters her own school record by three seconds and is only two seconds off of a Division III qualifying mark. While it is still undecided if Kevric will try to pursue a qualifying mark, it is certain that she has left her mark on the Centre College track & field program as she finished the year as a SCAC conference champion and runner-up.
Eileen Schilling ('07) finished third in the 10,000 meter run on Friday night. Her time (38:12) garnered her All-SCAC honors. Schilling followed up her top-three performance with a fourth place finish in the 5,000 meter run ( 18:47 ) the following day. Schilling still holds the SCAC record for the 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter runs. Schilling has captained the distance team the last four years. Her hard work, determination, and smile will surely be missed on and around the track next season. Schilling is without a doubt the most honored runner, male or female, to have attended Centre College.
Freshman Josh Ware (‘10) led Centre's team in scoring. Ware was conference runner-up in the triple jump with a career best leap of 44'. Ware also earned All-SCAC honors by placing third in the long jump with another personal best jump (21'8”). The leaping specialist filled in for an injured Adam Clark (‘07) on the 4x100 meter relay. The relay (Kevin Phelps '07, Josh Ware '10, Drew Patrick '08, and Nick Judah '08) finished second to Southwestern University . Clyde Madison ('09) earned All-SCAC accolades with his third place finish behind teammate Ware in the triple jump with his personal best hop, skip, and a jump (43'7”). Kevin Phelps ('07) ended his track season as a conference champion in the Javelin. Joey Polio ('09) rounded out Centre's All-SCAC performances with a third place finish ( 10:05 ) in a very tactical 3,000 meter steeplechase.
This was the final team event for the 2007 track season. The 2008 season will begin anew in February of next year.
