Freshman jumper qualifies for Indoor Nationals
Chrys Jones has qualified to compete in the triple and long jumps at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track National Championships. The meet will be held on the campus of Ohio Northern University located in Ada, OH on March 14-15.
First-year student Chrys Jones has broken Centre records in every jumping event he has attempted this season. Jones, from Harrodsburg, Ky., and a 2007 graduate of Mercer County High School, is finishing his first collegiate indoor track and field season on a high note.
In this season alone, Jones has outperformed even the best expectations; as his marks not only earned him new indoor school records in the triple, long, and high jump events at Centre, but also NCAA Division III Indoor National qualifying marks in two of the events.
Jones enters the NCAA meet as the top seed in the triple jump with a season best jump of 15.39 meters (50'-9") and is ranked fourth in the long jump with a distance of 7.23 meters (23'-8.75"). This marks the first time in Centre College track history that an athlete has qualified to compete at the NCAA Championships in a jumping event.
Even though Chrys is only a freshman this will not be the first time he has competed in a big meet. Jones has won numerous Kentucky high school State Championships, and currently he is the only high school athlete in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to have ever jumped more then 50 feet at the state competition. Also, during his senior year of high school, Jones qualified for the NIKE Outdoor High School National Championships in the triple jump, where he finished second. Jones will compete in the long jump on Friday at 1:00 p.m. and the Triple Jump on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
