Colonels finish 1-2 in MIT Quad Tournament
After splitting its first two matches of the day, the Centre College volleyball team dropped its third match to finish 1-2 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Quad Tournament, hosted by MIT, Saturday, Oct. 14, in Boston, Mass.
The Colonels fell to both Eastern Connecticut State University and MIT, while sandwiching a win over Colby-Sawyer College in between their two defeats.
Centre opened the day with a 3-1 loss to Eastern Connecticut, falling 32-30, 30-27, 25-30, 30-25. Junior Sarah Burger (Goshen, Ky.) paced the Colonels with 17 kills. Freshman Kelly McCoy (Lewisville, Texas) tallied 16 kills. Senior Kate Bennett (Louisville, Ky.) posted 41 assists and senior Megan McElveen (Cold Spring, Ky.) had 21 digs.
Centre rebounded in its second match of the day defeating Colby Sawyer in five games. The Colonels won the first game 32-30, but then dropped the next two games by the same 29-31 score. Centre then rebounded to win the final two games 31-29 and 15-10.
McCoy led the Colonels with 17 kills and three blocks. Sophomore Lindsay Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio) registered 15 kills. Bennett had her second straight match with 40+ assists, notching 46 in the win. McElveen added 19 digs, while senior Ellie Exner (Durham, N.C.) chipped in 19 digs.
In the final match of the day, Centre fell to the host and tournament champion, MIT, in three games 30-23, 30-27, 30-15.
For her efforts on the day, Bennett was named to the all-tournament team.
Centre, now 11-17 overall, will return home to host the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference East Divisional #2, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21-22. The Colonels will first play Rhodes College at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by a match against Oglethorpe University at 6 p.m. The Divisional will take place on Centre's Homecoming weekend in Danville, Ky.
