Centre College volleyball hosted the second SCAC Eastern Divisional Tournament Oct 21-22. The team went 2-2 improving their standing in the conference to 6th.

Centre opened play against Rhodes College (currently tied for second in the conference) on Saturday and dropped a 3 game decision, 30-21, 30-28, 30-25. Leading the team in kills was junior Sarah Burger (Goshen, KY) with 11, while senior Kate Bennett added 20 assists and 14 digs. Next up for the Colonels was a much improved Oglethorpe team, however, Centre was still able to put the Stormy Petrels away in 3 games, 30-24, 30-19, 30-27. The Colonels were lead again by Sarah Burger who put the ball away 14 times for kills and a .414 hitting efficiency. Defensively, senior Megan McElveen (Cold Springs, KY) added 12 digs and 2 aces to the effort.

On Sunday Centre opened up play against Sewanee, the University of the South; a team that had beat them earlier in the year. However, this was not going to be a repeat performance for Sewanee; Centre would win the match in 3 games, 30-14, 30-25, 32-30. Sarah Burger added 15 kills while freshman Kelly McCoy (Dallas, TX) would chip in 11 kills to the team effort. senior Kate Bennett would add 23 assists in two games played while Megan McElveen would again pace the defense with 18 digs.

Last up for the Centre College Colonels would be rival DePauw University. The last time these two teams met the Depauw tigers would come away with a 5 game win; unfortunately, the story remained the same, Depauw won a thrilling 5 game match, 30-26, 22-30, 30-32, 30-22, 15-11. There were a lot of amazing performances and efforts by the Centre Colonels. junior Sarah Burger would again lead the offense with 23 kills while freshman Kelly McCoy would back her up with 14 kills and senior Christelle Ford (Corpus Christi, TX) would add 13 kills. senior Kate Bennett would record her 5th triple double of the year with 15 kills, 58 assists, and 19 digs. Defensively, seniors Megan McElveen and Ellie Exner (Durham, NC) would give valiant efforts with 31 and 23 digs respectively. Also, having a tremendous match was freshman Alex Headley (Owensboro, KY) who had 19 digs and lead the team with 5 aces.

The Colonels, now 8-12 overall, will return to action with their annual Halloween Bash this Saturday and Sunday Oct 28-29. Centre will open play Saturday against Piedmont College at 11 a.m. EST followed by a match with Wilmington College at 1 p.m. EST.
