Colonels split a pair in SCAC Cross Divisional

Jumping back into Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play for the first time in two weeks, the Centre College volleyball team split a pair of matches in the SCAC Cross Divisional #1, defeating Hendrix College before falling to Southwestern University, Friday, Oct. 6, in Georgetown, Texas.

The Colonels opened the day by snapping a five-match losing streak with a three-game win over Hendrix. Centre won 30-25, 30-26, 30-27. Junior Sarah Burger (Goshen, Ky.) paced the Colonels with 16 kills. Freshman Kelly McCoy (Lewisville, Texas) posted eight kills and three blocks.

Senior Kate Bennett (Louisville, Ky.) tallied 36 assists and four service aces. Senior Megan McElveen (Cold Spring, Ky.) notched 16 digs and senior Ellie Exner (Durham, N.C.) added 11 digs in the win.

The second match of the day saw Centre fall in three games to Southwestern, 30-20, 30-18, 30-26. Burger again led Centre in kills, this time with 10. Bennett registered 26 assists and Exner chipped in 16 digs in the defeat.

Centre, now 9-13 overall and 2-4 in the SCAC, will return to action, Saturday, Oct. 7 to continue the Cross Divisional. The Colonels will first play Millsaps College at 12 p.m., followed by a match against Trinity University at 4 p.m. in Georgetown, Texas.
