Volleyball signs eight to play in 2006
Thursday May 18th, head volleyball coach James Neyhouse announced the signing of eight new players to join the team in the fall of 2006. Four of the players hail from Kentucky, while the other four represent four different states (Georgia, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas).
"We were in need of both depth and height this year and I feel we not only got the depth and height we needed but we also added eight quality student-athletes to our roster, " said coach Neyhouse.
The ability to put up a strong block at the net is crucial in the sport of volleyball and an area we struggled with last year," commented Neyhouse. With the addition of players such as 6-1 Kelly McCoy (Lewisville, TX), 6-0 Jacqueline Beck (Lexington, KY), and 5-11 Katie Baughman (Doraville, GA) the Colonels look to step up their net play right away.
Neyhouse says he is also excited about the other 5 players who he believes all have the opportunity to contribute as freshman. 5-8 outside hitter Alex Headley (Owensboro, KY) and 5-7 outside hitter Megan Gatewood (Louisville, KY) are "great all-around players who come to Centre with both high level high school and club experience," says Neyhouse.
Also, making commitments to play at Centre in 2006 are three setters; 5-4 Jessica Garcia (Columbus, OH), 5-4 Mary Brieschke (Ann Arbor, MI), and 5-6 Laura Broughton (Lexington, KY). With the loss of starting setter Shannon Rosado the Colonels will rely heavily on the freshman setters to help the team in 2006.
Neyhouse said he ",expects these eight freshman to challenge our returning players, which include 2004 All-American Sarah Burger and 2003 SCAC Freshman-of-the-Year Kate Bennett, and that they will add to a strong core of returning players who all saw significant playing time last year."
Centre College went 17-21 last year and finished 5th in the conference standings. The Colonels will start the 2006 season on the road Sept 2-3 at the 12th Annual Cougar Classic, hosted by Averett University located in Danville, VA.
