Volleyball team splits first two matches
On its first day of the 2006 season, the Centre College volleyball team split a pair of matches, falling to Greensboro College 3-0 and then defeating Mary Baldwin College, at the 12th Annual Cougar Classic hosted by Averett College, Saturday, Sept. 2, in Danville, Va.
The Colonels fell to Greensboro in three games 30-26, 30-23, 30-25. Senior Kate Bennett (Louisville, Ky.) led Centre with 10 kills and 11 assists. Freshman Mary Brieschke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) tallied 10 assists and senior Ellie Exner (Durham, N.C.) notched 10 digs.
Centre bounced back in its second match of the day defeating Mary Baldwin in three games 30-17, 30-12, 30-27. Freshman Jacqueline Beck (Lexington, Ky.) paced the Colonels with nine kills and two blocks. Bennett had 11 assists, seven digs and three service aces.
The Colonels, now 1-1, will return to action, Sunday, Sept. 3, when the play both Roanoke College and Averett. The Roanoke match is set to begin at 10 a.m., while Centre will square off with Averett at 12 p.m. in the second day of the Classic.
