Volleyball drops first two SCAC matches
The Centre College volleyball team opened its 2006 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) season losing to both Rhodes College and Sewanee-University of the South on the first day of the SCAC East Divisional #1, Saturday, Sept. 23, in Greencastle, Ind.
The Colonels fell in three games to Rhodes in their first match of the day, 30-21, 30-16, 30-27. Freshman Kelly McCoy (Lewisville, Texas) and senior Kate Bennett (Louisville, Ky.) led Centre with seven kills each. McCoy also led the Colonels with two blocks, while Bennett added five assists.
Freshman Jessica Garcia (New Albany, Ohio) notched 10 assists, and senior Megan McElveen (Cold Spring, Ky.) added 15 digs. Senior Ellie Exner (Durham, N.C.) led the team with three service aces in the loss.
Centre later returned to the court against Sewanee, falling in four games, 30-23, 18-30, 30-24, 31-29. Junior Sarah Burger (Goshen, Ky.) posted 14 kills and two blocks. Bennett registered 13 kills, 27 assists and two service aces, and McElveen tallied 32 digs and four service aces.
The Colonels will be back in action, Sunday, Sept. 24, for the second day of the SCAC East Divisional #1. Centre will first play Oglethorpe University at 9 a.m., followed by a match against DePauw University at 2 p.m. in Greencastle, Ind.
