Centre defeats Oglethorpe, falls to DePauw
One day after dropping its first two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) matches of the season, the Centre College volleyball team returned to action to split a pair of matches, defeating Oglethorpe University and then falling to DePauw University, Sunday, Sept. 24, in Greencastle, Ind.
The two matches were played as part of the SCAC East Divisional #1, hosted by DePauw. Centre defeated Oglethorpe in its first match of the day, winning in three games, 30-22, 30-17, 30-23.
Junior Sarah Burger (Goshen, Ky.) led the Colonels with 17 kills. Senior Kate Bennett (Louisville, Ky.) posted 13 kills, 28 assists and 10 digs for a triple double. Senior Christelle Ford (Corpus Christi, Texas) had 13 digs, while seniors Megan McElveen (Cold Spring, Ky.) and Ellie Exner (Durham, N.C.) added 12 digs each.
Centre returned later in the day to drop a hard-fought five-game match to DePauw, losing 24-30, 30-24, 30-23, 25-30, 11-15. Burger, again led the Colonels with 27 kills. Freshman Alex Headley (Owensboro, Ky.) tallied 13 kills. Bennett notched 45 assists. Exner had 23 digs. McElveen added 16 digs, while Ford and freshman Laura Broughton (Lexington, Ky.) both had 15 digs.
Centre, now 8-8 overall and 1-3 in the SCAC, will next travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to take part in the College of Mount St. Joseph Tournament, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29-30. The Colonels will first play Baldwin-Wallace College in the first match at 6 p.m., followed by a match against Mount St. Joseph at 8 p.m. Friday night.
