Colonels again split a pair in volleyball
One day after splitting its first two matches of the season, the Centre College volleyball team again split a pair of matches, defeating Roanoke College 3-0 in its first match of the day and then falling to Averett University 3-1 on the final day of the 12th Annual Cougar Classic, hosted by Averett, Sunday, Sept. 3, in Danville, Va.
The Colonels opened the day winning in three games over Roanoke, 34-32, 30-22, 30-26. Junior middle hitter Sarah Burger (Goshen, Ky.) tallied 17 kills to lead Centre. Senior Kate Bennett (Louisville, Ky.) posted 24 assists and fellow senior Ellie Exner (Durham, N.C.) notched 14 digs in the win.
The second match saw Centre split the first two games against the host Averett and then drop the final two games to fall in four games, 30-24, 25-30, 30-25, 33-31. Three Colonels registered double-digit kills, including Burger (14), Bennett (12) and freshman Megan Gatewood (Louisville, Ky.) with 12. Bennett also added 19 assists, while Exner added 21 digs and senior Megan McElveen (Cold Spring, Ky.) chipped in 20 digs.
Centre, now 2-2 on the season, will next participate in the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Tournament, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9, in Terre Haute Ind. The Colonels will square off against Principia College at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by a match against Earlham College at 8 p.m.
