Centre volleyball wins one, loses one
For the third time this season, the Centre College volleyball team split a pair of matches, this time falling to Principia College 3-0, but rebounding in its second match to defeat Earlham College 3-2, Friday, Sept. 8 as part of the Rose-Hulman Volleyball Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.
The Colonels fell in three games against Principia, 30-18, 30-24, 30-29. Senior Kate Bennett (Louisville, Ky.) led Centre with nine kills and eight assists. Fellow senior Megan McElveen (Cold Spring, Ky.) posted 25 digs and freshman Jessica Garcia (New Albany, Ohio) added eight assists in the loss.
After dropping two of the first three games against Earlham, Centre fought back to win the final two games and the match, 30-24, 24-30, 22-30, 30-19, 15-6. Bennett once again paced the Colonels with her first triple-double of the season. The senior tallied 14 kills, 17 assists and 27 digs for the match.
Junior Sarah Burger (Goshen, Ky.) notched 13 kills and freshman Kelly McCoy (Lewisville, Texas) added 10 kills. McElveen led the Colonels with 34 digs. Freshman Mary Brieschke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) recorded 20 assists and senior Ellie Exner (Durham, N.C.) added four service aces.
Centre, now 3-3 on the year, will return to action, Saturday, Sept. 9 for the second day of the Invitational. The Colonels will first play the host, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 10 a.m. followed by a match against Manchester College at 12 p.m., in Terre Haute, Ind.
