Volleyball team sweeps a pair
After splitting a pair of matches the first three days of the season, the Centre College volleyball team ended that streak by defeating both the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Manchester College on the final day of the Rose-Hulman Volleyball Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 9, in Terre Haute, Ind.
The Colonels started the day with a three-game sweep of the host Engineers, 30-21, 30-13, 30-21. Junior middle hitter Sarah Burger (Goshen, Ky.) led the team with 17 kills. Senior Kate Bennett (Louisville, Ky.) notched 16 kills and senior Ellie Exner (Durham, N.C.) added 11 digs in the win.
Centre's second match of the day resembled its second match a day earlier against Earlham College. The Colonels won the first game, before falling in the next two games to fall behind 2-1. Centre then won the final two matches to come away with the 3-2 victory, 30-22, 19-30, 27-30, 30-24, 15-11.
Burger again, led the Colonels with 17 kills. Bennett tallied 13 kills and 21 assists. Freshman Mary Brieschke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) recorded 18 assists and senior Megan McElveen (Cold Spring, Ky.) added 28 digs.
Centre finished the Invitational tied with both Principia College and Earlham College with a 3-1 record.
Centre, now 5-3, will return home to host the Centre College Classic, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 16-17. The Colonels will open the Classic against LaGrange College at 11 a.m. Saturday and then later square off against Wilmington College at 4 p.m.
