Centre volleyball splits on final weekend
On the final weekend of regular season play the Centre College volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Cross Divisional #2, falling to Trinity University and then defeating Millsaps College, Friday, Nov. 3, in Atlanta, Ga.
The Colonels dropped their first match of the night in three games to Trinity 30-18, 30-19, 30-19. Junior Sarah Burger (Goshen, Ky.) had 11 kills to lead Centre. Senior Kate Bennett (Louisville, Ky.) tallied 28 assists and senior Ellie Exner (Durham, N.C.) notched 10 digs and a service ace in the defeat.
Centre rebounded in its second match defeating Millsaps in a tightly contested hard fought five-game match 32-30, 32-30, 25-30, 26-30, 15-12. Burger again paced the Colonels recording 19 kills. Freshman Kelly McCoy (Lewisville, Texas) posted 16 kills and seven blocks. Bennett had 49 assists and two service aces and Exner added 31 digs and four service aces. Senior Megan McElveen (Cold Spring, Ky.) chipped in 28 digs in the win.
With Bennett's 49 assists in the Colonels win over Millsaps, the senior has now surpassed the 1,000 assist mark for the season. Bennett currently sits fifth all-time in school history in career assists.
Centre, now 16-22 overall and 5-9 in the SCAC will be back in action, Saturday, Nov. 4, when they continue the SCAC Cross Divisional #2. The Colonels start the day with a match against Austin College at 12 p.m., followed by a match against Hendrix College at 4 p.m., in Atlanta, Ga.
