Volleyball News

One day after opening its 2007 season with a pair of losses, the Centre College volleyball team returned to action for the second day of the Wittenberg Invitational, defeating Eastern University and then falling to Defiance College, Saturday, Sept. 1, in Springfield, Ohio.

The Colonels opened the day earning its first win of the 2007 season, defeating Eastern University in a hard-fought five-game match, 35-33, 27-30, 22-30, 30-27, 15-6.

Senior middle hitter Sarah Burger (Goshen, Ky.) led the way with a season-high 22 kills  and 27 digs in the win. Freshman middle hitter Ashton Hupman (Lexington, Ky.) added nine kills. Senior setter Shannon Rosado (Louisville, Ky.) had 30 assists and sophomore Laura Broughton (Lexington, Ky.) posted 26 digs.

Centre fell in three games to Defiance in its second match of the day 30-25, 30-15, 30-18. Burger and junior Layla Marefat (Lexington, Ky.) led the way with 10 and eight kills respectively.

Sophomores Megan Gatewood (Louisville, Ky.) and Alex Headley (Owensboro, Ky.) tallied eight digs apiece and Rosado and sophomore Mary Brieschke (Ann Arbor, Mi.) added 14 assists each.

Centre, now 1-3, will next play, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8-9, when it travels to Washington, Penn. to play in the Washington & Jefferson University Tournament. The Colonels will open with Ohio Wesleyan University and Dickinson College at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday.
