Volleyball team opens SCAC Tournament with a split
On the opening day of the inaugural Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament, the Centre College volleyball team split a pair of matches, defeating Hendrix College in four games before falling to Austin College in three games, Friday, Nov. 2, in Sherman, Texas.
The Colonels, which entered the tournament as the #7 seed, defeated tenth seeded Hendrix for the third time this season, winning 30-27, 28-30, 30-24, 30-22. Centre won both regular season matches in three games each.
Senior Sarah Burger (Goshen, Ky.) led the team with 18 kills in the win. Sophomore Kelly McCoy (Lewisville, Texas) had 12 kills and six blocks. Sophomore Mary Brieschke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) tallied 26 assists, while sophomore Laura Broughton (Lexington, Ky.) added 33 digs and senior Shannon Rosado (Louisville, Ky.) notched 21 digs.
Centre then faced the #2 seed and host of the tournament, Austin, in the second match of the day. The Colonels lost to the Kangaroos for the third time this season, all in three games, 30-15, 30-20, 30-24.
Centre will return to action Saturday, Nov. 3 for the second day of the tournament. The Colonels will play the #3 seed Rhodes College at 11:15 a.m. CST, with the winner playing either #4 Colorado College or #8 Millsaps College in the fifth place match in Sherman, Texas. |
