Volleyball News

After splitting a pair of matches the previous day, the Centre College volleyball team repeated those results on the second day of the Washington and Jefferson Tournament falling to Ohio Wesleyan University in its first match and then rebounding to defeat the University of Pittsburgh-Greenville in the second match, Sunday, Sept. 9, in Washington, Penn.

The Colonels, which had defeated Dickinson College before falling to Washington and Jefferson on the first day, fell to Ohio Wesleyan in four matches, 30-28, 30-21, 20-30, 30-24.

Senior Sarah Burger (Goshen, Ky.) paced Centre with 18 kills in the first match. Sophomore Laura Broughton (Lexington, Ky.) had 35 digs. Sophomore Megan Gatewood (Louisville, Ky.) notched 26 digs and senior Shannon Rosado (Louisville, Ky.) added 24 assists.

The Colonels rebounded in the second match to post a hard-fought five-game win over Pittsburgh-Greenville 20-30, 30-21, 23-30, 30-21, 15-11.

Burger again had a strong showing, tallying 23 kills and five blocks. Sophomore Mary Brieschke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) had 23 assists. Gatewood recorded 19 digs. Sophomore Alex Headley (Owensboro, Ky.) had 14 digs and freshman Ashton Hupman (Lexington, Ky.) added four blocks in the win.

For her efforts this weekend, Burger was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Centre, now 3-5 on the season, will return home Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15-16 to host the Centre College Classic. The Colonels will open the Classic against Wilmington College at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Danville, Ky.
