Centre ends Halloween Bash at 3-1
After winning their last six matches the Centre College volleyball team finally fell to NAIA member Loyola University-New Orleans in the championship match of the Halloween Bash, hosted by Centre, Sunday, Oct. 28 in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels have now won eight of their last ten matches with their only two losses to teams with scholarship players on their rosters. Centre began the day by beating Piedmont College in five tight games before falling to Loyola in three games.
The Colonels split the first four games against Piedmont with Centre winning games one and three 30-26, 30-28 and losing games two and four 28-30, 22-30, before winning game five 15-12. Loyola then won three games by a combined 11 points 30-25, 30-27, 30-27 in the championship match.
Centre was led by senior Sarah Burger (Goshen, Ky.) who tallied 34 kills and six blocks during the two matches. Following close behind her was sophomore Kelly McCoy (Dallas, Texas) who had 24 kills and seven blocks in the two matches.
Defensively, sophomore libero Laura Broughton (Lexington, Ky.) had 53 digs and four aces while sophomore Alex Headley (Owensboro, Ky.) was able to garner 21 digs and three blocks for the Colonels.
Centre, now 16-18 overall, will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 30 when they head to Lexington, Ky. to take on in-state rival Transylvania University. The non-conference match is set to begin at 7 pm. |
