Colonels end season with a win and a loss
The Centre College volleyball team completed its 2007 season falling to Rhodes College and then defeating Millsaps College to finish in seventh place at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament, Saturday, Nov. 3 in Sherman, Texas.
The seventh-seeded Colonels opened the day playing third seeded Rhodes. The Lynx won game one 31-29. Centre answered in game two with a 30-25 win, but fell in games three and four 30-17 and 30-18.
Senior Sarah Burger (Goshen, Ky.) led the Colonels with 18 kills, 22 digs and five blocks. Sophomore Kelly McCoy (Lewisville, Texas) had eight kills and two service aces and sophomore Megan Gatewood (Louisville, Ky.) added 13 digs and one service ace.
Centre then concluded its season defeating Millsaps for the second time this year in three tries. The two teams split the first two games with the Colonels winning game one 30-20 and the Majors winning game two 30-28. Centre then won the final two games in convincing fashion 30-18 and 30-12.
Burger, playing in the final match of her career posted a personal match best of 28 kills. She also had 20 digs and four blocks to pace the Colonels. McCoy posted 13 kills and three blocks. Senior Shannon Rosado (Louisville, Ky.), also playing her final match, had 24 assists and two service aces, while Gatewood added three service aces in the win.
Burger ends her career only 39 kills shy of the SCAC record with over 2200 total kills in her four year career to finish second all-time in the SCAC volleyball record books.
Centre ends the season with an 18-21 overall record and 6-9 mark in the SCAC, marking the second straight season with 18 wins.
