Volleyball falls to Wilmington, defeats Transylvania
On the first day of the Centre College Volleyball Classic the Centre volleyball team split a pair of matches, falling to Wilmington College in its first match of the day and then defeating Transylvania University in the final match of the day, Saturday, Sept. 15, in Danville, Ky.
After winning the first two games, the Colonels fell in the last three to lose the day's opening match to Wilmington in five games 15-30, 26-30, 30-23, 30-28, 15-13.
Senior middle hitter Sarah Burger (Goshen, Ky.) paced the Colonels with team-highs in kills with 27 and blocks with seven. Freshman Ashton Hupman (Lexington, Ky.) posted 12 kills and four blocks.
Senior Shannon Rosado (Louisville, Ky.) had a team-high 32 assists. Sophomore Mary Brieschke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) notched 21 assists. Sophomores Laura Broughton (Lexington, Ky.) and Alex Headley (Owensboro, Ky.) led the team in digs with 28 and 26 and sophomore Megan Gatewood (Louisville, Ky.) had seven service aces.
Centre rebounded after its tough loss in the first match to defeat Transylvania in three games 30-26, 32-30, 30-20. Burger again, had a strong showing with 18 kills and four blocks to lead the Colonels.
Rosado posted 23 assists and two service aces. Brieschke had 14 assists. Broughton tallied 18 digs and Gatewood added 11 more digs in the win.
Centre will resume play in the Classic, Sunday, Sept. 16. The Colonels will open the day against Ohio Wesleyan University at 10 a.m. followed by a match with Hanover College at 2 p.m. in Danville, Ky. |
