Centre College announces the 2009 volleyball recruiting class

The 2009 class consists of four players from three different states who have all chosen to continue their academic and athletic endeavors at Centre College beginning in the fall of 2009. The four recruits are Rebecca Pugh from California, Jenna Foushee from Kentucky, Crystal Montes from Texas, and Haley Buchanan of Lexington, Ky.

Becca Pugh will transfer from the University of California-Riverside where she played as an outside hitter and defensive specialist for the NCAA Division I Highlanders. The 5-9" Pugh is originally from Colfax County, California where she was a three sport stand-out athlete in volleyball, basketball, and softball. Head coach James Neyhouse is, "thrilled to have such a quality person and athlete join our program here at Centre. I fully expect Becca to challenge as an outside hitter from day one."

Pugh stated that she decided to transfer from UC-Riverside to Centre because, "When I visited campus I loved the immediate feeling of being welcomed and the atmosphere. Also, I am really looking forward to being academically challenged and being part of a team that will take home this year's banner."

Defensive specialist Jenna Foushee is a native of Louisville, Kentucky where she played high school ball for Manual and club ball for perennial power KIVA (Kentucky-Indiana Volleyball Academy). "Jenna comes from one of the best volleyball backgrounds a coach could ask for. She has had great training from early in her playing career and I think we will begin to see the benefit of that training sooner rather than later," commented head coach James Neyhouse.

When asked why she chose to attend school and play volleyball at Centre, Foushee stated, "I love the feel of the campus as a whole and I thought I wouldn't get a better education anywhere else. I also love playing volleyball, so I knew that Centre was the perfect place for me."

Crystal Montes hails from Cedar Hills, Texas where she was a two sport athlete in volleyball and softball. The 5-1" defensive specialist played club ball for one of the best club programs in Texas, Texas Advantage. Coach Neyhouse added, "Crystal brings a great work ethic and attitude along with a high level of play in the back court that I think will be infectious to our program."

Montes had the following to say about why she chose to attend Centre, "because of the triple threat; academics, athletics, and the overall atmosphere! I couldn't believe what Centre had to offer me, it was too good to pass up. Playing volleyball is just the biggest plus!"

The fourth recruit, Haley Buchanan, is originally from Lexington, Ky., but is already enrolled at Centre College and will be starting her sophomore year this fall. Buchanan played high school at state power Henry Clay and her club ball for TEVA (Thoroughbred Elite Volleyball Association). Buchanan spent most of her time in the libero position.

When asked why she decided to tryout this spring for volleyball, Buchanan had this to say, "Simply because I miss it. Its hard not doing something you love."

When asked about the 2009 class of volleyball recruits, head coach James Neyhouse stated, "This is one of the finest group of young ladies I have ever recruited. Not just as players, but more specifically as people. All four of them are genuinely great young people who will add in many ways to our program beyond their athleticism."

The Centre College volleyball team will open the 2009 season against The College of Mount Saint Joseph, located in Cincinnati, Ohio on Tuesday September 1 at 7:30pm.
