Colonels split at Hanover College Tournament
Having won four straight matches, the Centre College volleyball team split a pair of matches falling to Anderson University in match one before defeating Transylvania University in match two on the first day of the Hanover College Invitational Friday, Sept. 11 in Hanover, Ind.
In the first match of the day, Centre fell to Anderson in five games. After falling 25-22 in game one, the Colonels rebounded to earn a 25-16 win in game three. Anderson won game three 25-15, but Centre bounced back again to win 25-21 in game four and force a fifth game when the Colonels fell short 15-11.
Sophomore Stephanie Woeste (Louisville, Ky.) led the team with 11 kills and two blocks. Junior Ashton Hupman (Lexington, Ky.) posted 10 kills. Senior Laura Broughton (Lexington, Ky.) had 19 digs and sophomore Laura Hench (Lexington, Ky.) added 14 digs and two service aces.
After a five-game match to open the Invitational, Centre played another five-game match, this time defeating Transylvania University to finish with a split on the first day.
The Colonels won game one 26-24, but dropped both games two and three by the same 25-22 score. The team responded in game four winning 25-17 and then won 15-8 in the final game.
Junior Rebecca Pugh (Colfax, Calif.) paced the team with 16 kills. Senior Jacqueline Beck (Lexington, Ky.) tallied 12 kills. Senior Mary Brieschke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) notched 29 assists, while sophomore Hannah Greer (Owensboro, Ky.) had 23 assists and three service aces and Woeste recorded four blocks.
Centre will return Saturday, Sept. 12 for day two of the Invitational. The Colonels will play Capital at 9:15 a.m. in Hanover, Ind. |
