Playing a rare Friday night non-conference match, the Centre College volleyball team defeated Defiance College in five games Friday, Oct. 9 in Danville, Ky.

The Colonels, who have now won four of their last five matches, improve to 12-8 overall, while Defiance falls to 13-9 on the year.

After falling 31-29 in a hard-fought first game, Centre responded to win games two and three 25-11, 25-21. The Yellow Jackets bounced back to win game four 25-18 to force a fifth game, where the Colonels won 15-10 to win the match.

Sophomore Stephanie Woeste (Louisville, Ky.) paced the Colonels with 20 kills and four blocks. Junior Ashton Hupman (Lexington, Ky.) and sophomore Laura Hench (Lexington, Ky.) tallied 10 kills each. Senior Mary Brieschke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) posted 23 assists.

Sophomore Hannah Greer (Owensboro, Ky.) had 21 assists. Seniors Laura Broughton (Lexington, Ky.) and Alex Headley (Owensboro, Ky.) notched 24 and 20 digs respectively in the win.

Up next, is a trip to Lexington, Ky. to play in-state rival Transylvania University. The two teams met earlier this year at the Hanover College Tournament with Centre winning in five games. Start time is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13.
