Volleyball wins Kalamazoo Invitational with 4-0 record
After sweeping a pair of matches on day one of the Kalamazoo Invitational, the Centre College volleyball team continued its hot play winning two more matches on the second day to win the Invitational with a 4-0 record, Sunday, Sept. 6 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The Colonels, now 4-1 overall, opened the day against the host, Kalamazoo College. The two teams split the first two games with Kalamazoo winning 25-18 in game one and Centre answering with a 25-17 win in game two. The Colonels fell in game three 25-21 and were on the verge of losing the match in game four but came all the way back from a 14-0 deficit to win 25-18 and force a game five. Centre earned a 16-14 win in the final game to win the match 3-2.
Junior Ashton Hupman (Lexington, Ky.) led the team with 14 kills and 1.5 blocks. Sophomore Stephanie Woeste (Louisville, Ky.) notched 12 kills and 1.5 blocks. Senior Laura Broughton (Louisville, Ky.) had 31 digs. Sophomore Hannah Greer (Owensboro, Ky.) chipped in with 20 assists and three service aces and senior Mary Brieschke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) added 20 assists in the win.
Centre only needed three games in its final match of the tournament to defeat Olivet College 25-12, 25-18, 26-24 to win the Invitational. Woeste again, had a solid match tallying 12 kills and two blocks. Junior Rebecca Pugh (Colfax, Calif.) had 10 kills. Broughton added 23 digs and Brieschke finished with 24 assists.
For their efforts, Woeste and Broughton were named to the all-tournament team.
The Colonels will return to action Friday, Sept. 11 when they travel to Hanover, Ind. for the Hanover College Invitational. Centre will look to continue its win streak against Anderson University at 3:15 p.m. Friday and then Transylvania at 6:45 p.m. in Hanover, Ind.
