Centre volleyball goes 1-1 at the Centre Invitational
The Centre College volleyball team won their first match at the Centre Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 19 in Danville, Ky. by beating Spalding University 3-0. Centre dropped their second match of the Centre Invitational to Hanover College 2-3.
The Colonels swept Spalding University in the first match of the day for Centre in three games winning 25-21, 25-22, and 25-18.
Sophomore Laura Hench (Lexington, Ky.) led Centre in kills with eight and senior Megan Gatewood (Louisville, Ky.) recorded 10 digs in the match. Senior Mary Brieschke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and sophomore Hannah Greer (Owensboro, Ky.) each had six assists for the Colonels.
Centre then hosted Hanover in their second match at the Centre Invitational. The Colonels fought hard to win the match, but Hanover outlasted the Colonels winning in five games. Hanover took the first game 26-24 and Centre was able to win the next two 25-21 and 25-19. Hanover hung in the match by winning the fourth game 28-26. In the fifth game Hanover took the match by winning 15-9.
Sophomore Laura Hench (Lexington, Ky.), senior Kelly McCoy (Lewisville, Tx.), and junior Ashton Hupman (Lexington, Ky.) each had 12 kills against the Panthers. Senior Mary Brieschke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) had 25 assists in the match, senior Laura Broughton (Lexington, Ky.) recorded 21 digs, and sophomore Stephanie Woeste (Louisville, Ky.) registered 4.5 blocks.
Centre will return to play Saturday, Sept. 26 when they travel to Greencastle, Ind. to play in the SCAC East/West tournament hosted by DePauw University. The Colonels will play Trinity University at 12:00 p.m. and Austin College at 4:00 p.m.
