Volleyball team defeats Transylvania again
For the second time this season, the Centre College volleyball team has defeated in-state rival Transylvania University and for the second time, the Colonels won in five games defeating the Pioneers Tuesday, Oct. 13 in Lexington, Ky.
Centre, which defeated Transylvania in five games back on September 11 as part of the Hanover College Tournament, improves to 13-8 overall, while the loss snaps a three-match winning streak for the Pioneers, who fall to 10-12 on the year.
After dropping the first game 28-26, Centre evened the match at one game apiece with a 25-19 win in game two. The two teams split the next two games with Transylvania winning game three 25-14 and the Colonels forcing a fifth game with a 25-18 win in game four. Game five took extra points to finish, but the Colonels came out on top with a 17-15 win to earn the five-game win.
Sophomore Stephanie Woeste (Louisville, Ky.) and senior Kelly McCoy (Lewisville, Texas) paced the Colonels' attack. Woeste tallied eight kills and four blocks, while McCoy added seven kills and 2.5 blocks.
In addition, senior Laura Broughton (Lexington, Ky.) notched 22 digs and fellow senior Mary Brieschke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) posted 19 assists in the victory.
Centre, which has now won five of its last six matches, will step back into conference play with the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) East/West Divisional #2 Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 16-17 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Colonels will open against Southwestern University at noon MST and then play Colorado College at 6 p.m. MST Saturday. |
