Project Winterize prepares seniors homes for cold

Winter always brings the kind of horrendous weather in which everyone's residence, whether big or small, dorm or house, needs special preparations. In the city of Danville, some senior citizens need seasonal changes made to their houses, too. Unable to do it themselves, and having no one like Physical Plant to call on is why, year after year, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity conducts Project Winterize.
"Project Winterize is a chance for us to help those in the Danville community that need assistance in preparing their homes for the winter months," says Chris Schultz '01, president of SAE. Brothers from the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity were out in mass the weekend before Thanksgiving for their annual project. Sigma Alpha Epsilon has been working alongside the Boyle County Senior Citizens' Home for the past decade to continuously mend senior citizens' houses who have no one else to do it.
At numerous senior citizens' homes across Danville, Sigma Alpha Epsilon's fraternity men could be seen doing various chores in preparation of upcoming, harsh weather. In the yards, brothers raked leaves into piles, clearing porches and walkways for easier use. They also bagged the leaves and removed them from the residences. At some houses, brothers scaled ladders and emptied out clogged gutters, preventing excessive snow and ice from bringing them down later. Brothers at one house even chopped up fallen tree limbs to make them easier to remove. Brad Guilfoil '02, said, "I enjoyed doing this philanthropy because it allowed me to interact with those in the community and display that our fraternity cares about Danville and those in need."
At the end of it all, 40 brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon put in a total of 120 man-hours. They were able to help out 13 houses where assistance was requested. That's not all. This year, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity is leading a national campaign to raise money to build a World War II Memorial. Approximately 40 faculty members pledged 5 cents for every hour worked, which will be donated as part of a larger contribution to the World War II Memorial cause. "The World War II Memorial is one way of thanking those in the armed forces who helped secure freedom in Europe and peace throughout the world," says Schultz about the project. This year's Project Winterize may have accomplished more than in previous years with its dual purpose, but next year will bring its fair share of bad weather and more houses needing winterization by Sigma Alpha Epsilon. After last years successful turnout, the Holiday Ball is returning to campus with hopes of becoming Centres newest tradition.
Scheduled for Dec. 2 in Cowan, the Holiday Ball will once again feature the Lexington-based party band IMPACT. The decorating committee, headed by Kristin Allison 04 and Jackie Smith 04, will be working hard this week to transform the dining commons into a dance floor trimmed with Christmas lights and snowflakes.
A unique feature of the ball is that it is open to the entire campus, including faculty and staff. "One of the greatest strengths of this event is that it is a community event open to both Greeks and non-Greeks, its not just one groups formal," said David Eberhardt, Director of Student Activities.
Students, like Darren Hudson 03, are looking forward to the event. Recalling last years occasion, Hudson said, "The band played a good mix of classic rock, traditional party songs and swing music. They were definitely able to keep the crowd dancing and into the music."
Brendan Adkins 03, is also planning on attending the ball this year. "Im interested in what Cowans going to look like," said Adkins. "I also heard the band was pretty good."
Echoing the sentiments of Adkins was Stuart Blankenship 04. "Im looking forward to indulging in merriment and Yuletide cheer with some of my best friends."
Ticket sales began Monday and will continue through Dec. 1 in Cowan. Individual tickets are $6 and tickets for couples are priced at $10 a pair. Along with admission to the ball, the purchase of each ticket includes a complimentary champagne glass designed for the event.
Festivities begin at 9 p.m. and will continue until midnight. A large turnout this year will ensure that the Holiday Ball will become an event to look forward to for years to come.Back to top...

Tanner Wann '01, officially has the hottest legs on campus. Wann, a member of Sigma Chi, won the award as a part of the annual HOT LEGS contest held by Kappa Alpha Theta.
Every November, the members of Theta nominate a representative of each fraternity, as well as a freshman and a non-affiliated upperclassman, to flex their limbs and have their photo hung anonymously in Cowan to be admired and scrutinized by all. Votes are collected in the form of money, which is put into a box that corresponds to the affiliation or non-affiliation associated with each pair of legs.
In a tabulating procedure only slightly less complicated than the one in Palm Beach, whoever receives the most money wins. Proceeds are put entirely toward the purchase of Thanksgiving baskets for families whose names were provided by the Salvation Army.
Contestants walked away knowing that they had helped make the Thanksgiving of four families a little more enjoyable Back to top....

Bill Gates continued the fight for his company Monday, claiming that U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson was biased and thrust himself into the dispute as opposed to judging it impartially. This was in light of the fact that the judge made comments to the media on several occasions and even took part in an interview with the Washington Post, something very rare for a Federal Judge.
France to research human embryos
Tuesday, French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin said his government was drawing up legislation to allow research on the human embryo to help correct genetic birth defects and fight diseases. The legislation will likely trigger protests and fuel debate on how far scientists should go in interfering with nature. In light of this decision, Jospin maintained that reproductive human cloning would remain "strictly forbidden."
