Chowan was completed in June 2008, and served as Centre's temporary dining facility following the demolition of Cowan Dining Commons and the construction of the new Campus Center. The building now functions as a multi-purpose facility for large-scale student activities and other campus uses.

A "Name the New Eatery Contest," gave students, faculty and staff the opportunity to lay claim to a piece of Centre history. The "winning temporary name" as chosen in three rounds of student voting was Chowan.
