Petition by Subscribers of Danville Academy (December 5, 1818)

Petition by the subscribers of the Danville Academy to the Kentucky General Assembly requesting that the Academy's funds be united with those raised by the Synod of Kentucky for the purpose of establishing the "College of Kentucky", i.e. Centre College.

"Thomas Montgomery a member of the Board produced a paper containing subscriptions to the College by Goodman Oldham & others amounting in the whole to $405 which was ordered to be filed & preserved by the clerk." (Centre College Board of Trustees minutes, September 4, 1819). Subscriptions were pledges to pay a certain amount of money over a period of time, and this document lists the names of people who promised to pay in four equal installments over the course of four years.

Trustees of Danville in Account with Centre College (May 16, 1820)

In 1817 the Kentucky General Assembly passed an act allowing the Trustees of the Town of Danville to sell half of the Public Square (Constitution Square), the proceeds to go to the Trustees of the Danville Academy. A second enabling act, passed February 3, 1818, permitted the town to sell the remainder of the Public Square, one-half of the proceeds also to go to the Trustees of the Danville Academy. With the merger of the movement to establish the academy with that to found Centre College, the monies received from the sale of the Public Square passed to the Trustees of Centre College. The two sales took place of March 1 and November 28, 1819, and netted $5,757.42 for the College. This money, along with the $10,975 subscribed to the Danville Academy, which also passed to the Trustees of Centre College, comprised the college's initial funds.

In Centre's early history, student final examinations were public events. This is a bill for advertising the Spring exams in J.J. Polk's Olive Branch newspaper.
