List of Books

This exhibit presents a survey of books from the Rare Book collection of The Grace Doherty Library relating to selected aspects of music: books with music (psalters, hymn and anthem collections), books about theory and composition, and books with writings related to opera. It reflects the disciplines and interests of two faculty members, one from the music department and the other from the history and religion faculty.

Robert Weaver and Richard Heitzenrater assembled the exhibit and prepared a descriptive pamphlet on the occasion of the annual meeting of the South Central Chapter of the American Musicological Society held at Centre College in 1977. Heitzenrater, a specialist in Wesley studies, taught a course in books and printing for a number of years at the College. Weaver has studied the relationship between the sixteenth-century Flemish composer and music editor, Hubert Waelrant, and the Antwerp printer, Jan de Laet. The texts for this online version of the exhibit are taken from that printed pamphlet.
