Centre professor publishes book about human mind
DANVILLE, KY - Brian P. Cooney, professor of philosophy at Centre College, is the editor of a book recently published by Wadsworth Publishing. Entitled The Place of Mind, the book brings together essays that explore philosophical issues about the human mind posed by developments in the sciences of the brain and artificial intelligence.
The book, which is intended for use a college textbook, offers a wide range of perspectives. Cooney incorporated classic essays by great thinkers of the past, including René Descartes and John Locke. He also drew on the expertise of modern-day philosophers currently teaching at colleges and universities in Australia, England and the U.S, including retired Centre philosopher Bruce White.
Cooney contributed a chapter of the book, as well as extensive introductory and closing comments and annotations for passages that are particularly complex.
A member of the Centre faculty since 1980, Cooney holds a bachelor's degree from St. Louis University and master's and doctoral degrees from McGill University. He is the author of a previous book, A Hylomorphic Theory of Mind.
