Cam Demmerle honored as Scholar-Athlete
DANVILLE, KY -- Cam Demmerle, a Centre College senior and graduate of Beechwood High School, has been honored as a NCAA Division III Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Representatives of the Burger King Corporation visited the Centre campus Oct. 9 to present the college a $10,000 check in his honor. The funds have been added to Centre's scholarship endowment.
The Burger King Scholar-Athlete program honors students for outstanding athletic and academic achievements, along with commitment to community service. Demmerle has maintained a 3.65 grade point average with a double major in economics and religion. He is a starter at nose guard for the Centre football team and has been named to the all-conference team and the all-district academic team.
In addition, Demmerle volunteers with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program and chairs a fraternity fund raising committee for the Cerebral Palsy School of Louisville, Ky.
Demmerle graduated from Beechwood High School in 1996. His parents are Margaret Cameron of Mason, Ohio, and Daniel Demmerle of Cincinnati.
Developed to foster the pursuit of athletic and academic excellence while encouraging social awareness and community service, the Burger King College Football Scholarship Program is the single largest corporate commitment of its kind to the sport of college football. Now in its fifth year, the program has already donated a total of $4.3 million dollars in college scholarship funds to 211 colleges and universities nationwide. The 1999 program will raise the overall Burger King contribution to $5.3 million.
For ten weeks during the current fall football season, Burger King Corporation will name eight scholar-athlete award winners per week, two from each division of the NCAA. Four of these winners, one from each college football division, will be selected as finalists for the 1999 Burger King Scholar Athlete of the Year Award and will garner an additional $25,000 for their college or university scholarship funds. One individual will be named Burger King Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and the Burger King Corporation will set up a $100,000 scholarship endowment at that athlete's college or university.
