Rob Duncan Honored at Centre College

DANVILLE, KY -- Rob Duncan, an Inez resident and graduate of Sheldon Clark High School, has been honored by Centre College as Student Volunteer of the Month. Duncan was chosen for his work organizing three campuswide blood drives this year.

Duncan says he agreed to coordinate the blood drives after helping a fraternity brother with the project last year. "It's become a tradition for our fraternity, which is Sigma Alpha Epsilon," says Duncan. "I watched Gary Bowen direct it last year, and when he asked if I would take over this year, I agreed."

The blood drives require coordination with a Red Cross office out of Louisville, as well as a variety of campus groups that help with publicity. "We publicized it by putting up lots of signs on campus," Duncan says, "and we talk to as many students as we can to encourage them to participate."

His efforts paid off when the fall and winter blood drives each surpassed their goals. Duncan still is at work on the spring drive, which is scheduled in March. He's busy soliciting donations from local businesses to use for door prizes, as well as making signs and confirming details with the Red Cross.

Along with his work on the blood drive, Duncan is vice president and philanthropy chair for the fraternity. He organized a special chapter service project for the fraternity during the fall term, when Duncan and other members donated a Saturday to help elderly citizens prepare their homes for winter.

Duncan is an English major who plans a career in law. His parents are Joanne and Robert Duncan, and he graduated from Sheldon Clark in 1996.

Centre sponsors the Volunteer of the Month award as a way of saying thank you to the many students who contribute their time each year to community service. More than half of all Centre students participate in regular community service every year, working with agencies that include Big Brothers/Big Sisters, retirement homes, elementary schools and hospitals.

As Volunteer of the Month, Duncan will be treated to lunch by a group of Centre employees and will receive a framed certificate.
