Centre College opens year with strong enrollment
DANVILLE, KY -- Centre College opened its fall term with the second highest enrollment in the college's history. Centre registered 1,027 students on the first full day of classes, Monday Sept. 13. That compares with 1,053 students last year on opening day, a record for the college. Centre's average enrollment for opening day during the past decade has been 959 students.
The academic profile of the freshman class was especially strong this year in terms of scores on college entrance examinations and class rank in high school. Three-fourths of the freshman had ACT scores of 25 or above, and close to 75 percent of the freshmen ranked in the top 20 percent of their high school class. The first-year class includes 40 Kentucky Governor's Scholars.
Centre enrolled 252 freshmen and 17 new transfers, representing 26 states and three foreign countries. Just over two-thirds of the new students were from Kentucky, including 11 from Boyle County, 10 from counties contiguous to Boyle and 18 from Fayette County.
The new class divided almost evenly between men and women, with 55 percent female and 45 percent male.
Centre currently is ranked by U.S. News & World-Report as one of the 50 best liberal arts colleges in the United States.
