Centre College to celebrate Family Weekend Oct. 8-9

DANVILLE, KY-Centre College will host several hundred visitors to the campus on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8 and 9, when the college holds its annual Family Weekend celebration.

A varied schedule of events has been planned for families of currently enrolled Centre students, including a series of academic samplers, which are mini-versions of classroom lectures by some of Centre's most stimulating professors. This year's samplers will include historian Michael Hamm, with an overview of contemporary politics and the economy in Russia; glass artist Stephen Powell on the history of Venetian glass, and biology professor Mike Barton, discussing the "secret lives" of automobiles.

Family Weekend registration begins at noon on Friday, Oct. 8, and continues throughout the afternoon. On Friday afternoon, parents may attend class with their sons or daughters, schedule appointments with faculty advisors or attend soccer games at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The college will host an evening student-faculty showcase of talent at the Combs Student Center, beginning at 8:30 p.m.

The Saturday schedule for Family Weekend features campus tours and the academic samplers. Centre will have varsity athletic events in field hockey and football.

Centre president John Roush and his wife, Susie, will host a late afternoon reception at Craik House, followed by a "Centre Family Celebration" at the Combs Center. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will appear in concert at the Norton Center for the Arts on Saturday night.

Mona Wyatt, director of parent programs, is coordinator of Family Weekend.
