College honors students for work with Girl Scouts

DANVILLE, KY -- Centre College has chosen Heather Bradley and Michelle Gorin to receive the May Volunteer of the Month award for their leadership of a local Girl Scout troop. Both women had served as volunteer leaders with troop across their entire four years at Centre prior to graduating May 30.

The troop accepted girls from a wide range of ages and regularly met in locations convenient for residents of Danville's public housing complexes.

Gorin is a resident of Greensburg and graduated from Centre with a bachelor of arts degree in English. She recalls her freshman year at Centre, when she was not very involved in campus activities. "Several girls in my residence hall started talking about this Scout project, and we decided to volunteerpr," Gorin says. "Later, when they were days I thought I just didn't have time, I would go because of my commitment. When I got there, the Scouts would be so enthusiastic that I was glad I did it."

Gorin says she intends to continue doing volunteer work in her home town, probably through the church. She is a graduate of Green County High School and her parents are Walter and Anne Gorin.

Bradley is from Jackson, Miss., and completed a double major at Centre in international relations and anthropology/sociology. She will put her knowledge to the test later this summer when she begins a two-year appointment in the Peace Corps on an island in the Pacific. Even though she doesn't know the specific location yet, she thinks her work will focus on environmental education.

Bradley also recalls linking up with the Girl Scout troop during her freshman year at Centre. "I liked the idea of getting into a form of volunteer work that would involve a regular, weekly commitment," Bradley says. "The experience helped me become more realistic about community service. There were days when we had trouble getting things organized, and days when we had a hard time just getting parent permission slips for a field trip. But on the good days, we felt like we made a difference."

A graduate of Gulfport High School, Bradley is the daughter of Richard and Brenda Bradley.
