DramaCentre Students Present Machinal
DANVILLE, KY - DramaCentre and Centre College proudly announce another exciting production for their 1998-1999 season. On Wednesday through Saturday, February 3-6, DramaCentre will bring Sophie Treadwell's Machinal to the stage of Weisiger Theatre, Norton Center for the Arts. Performances begin at 8 p.m.
Machinal is the expressionistic masterpiece of adultery and murder based on the famous 1927 murder trial of Ruth Snyder and Harry Judd Gray. Snyder murdered her husband after she met Gray in a speakeasy. They were sentenced to death for their crime of passion and were executed. Treadwell depicts this sensational trial of the first woman in the U.S. ever to die by execution in the electric chair.
The historically based production was a hit when it premiered in 1928 on a Broadway stage, but has only recently been rediscovered. Both its New York and London revivals have brought rave reviews as the show relates human spirit vs. mechanization.
Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students and seniors. Groups of ten or more are also $4. Tickets are available from the Norton Center for the Arts box office 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday, or by calling the box office at (606) 236-4692.
