McDaniel Assumes Acting AD Duties
Joe McDaniel, who stepped down as Centre's head football coach following the 1997 season, has assumed his new position as acting athletics director at the school.
McDaniel, 64, will temporarily replace Dr. Ray Hammond, who will begin a seven-month sabbatical. Hammond also serves as a professor of biology at Centre.
Prior to his retirement from coaching, McDaniel served longer and amassed more victories than any football coach in Centre College history. He coached the Colonels for 18 years and finished his Centre career with 101 wins, 63 losses, and three ties. In 32 seasons, his overall record at Centre and Marietta College was 166-122-5. His .575 winning percentage ranked him seventh amongactive NCAA Division III coaches with at least 100 wins at the time of his retirement.
McDaniels served for seven seasons as an assistant coach at Muskingum and three more years at Marion Harding High School before becoming head football coach and athletics director at Marietta College in 1966. He moved to Centre in 1980.
McDaniel and wife Pat have five children, three of whom graduated from Centre.
