International magazine features Centre College president

DANVILLE, KY -- Centre College President John A. Roush shares the limelight with his favorite candy, a Payday bar, in an article published this month in CASE Currents, an international magazine. The article leads off with a full-page color photo of Roush and 15 smiling Centre students, each clutching one of the candy bars.

Written by Centre communications director Mike Norris, the article outlines the steps that Roush took early in his presidency to reach out to students and other members of the college community. The article concludes with tips for other campuses on how to best introduce a new president. The piece is entitled "The Popular President."

Roush mentioned his love of Payday bars in his first speech to the campus, delivered Jan. 30, 1998, and the candy became a symbol of his warm personal style in greeting people at the college. In his article, Norris says that conveying a sense of humor can be crucial to the success of college president or anyone in a leadership position.

Roush was elected to the Centre presidency on Jan. 30 and took office July 1, 1998.

The Currents' article was adapted from a chapter that Norris contributed to a book published this year by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). The book is entitled Integrated Marketing Communications.
