Centre College adds new sorority chapter on campus

DANVILLE, KY - Centre College announced this week the addition of a fourth sorority to the campus. The new sorority will be a chapter of Alpha Delta Pi, a national organization comparable to the other three sororities that already have chapters at Centre.

The decision to add a fourth sorority was made nearly a year ago, according to Vice President for Student Affairs Nancy Lackey. The specific selection of Alpha Delta Pi was made this month and came as the culmination of months of study and review by a committee of students, faculty and staff.

Alpha Delta Pi was chosen for its commitment to scholarship, community service and diversity, as well as strength of existing chapters within Kentucky.

Alpha Delta Pi has chapters at the University of Kentucky, as well as Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky and Murray State, along with chapters at Hanover College, Indiana University and Miami University of Ohio. The organization, which was founded in 1851 at Wesleyan Female College in Georgia, has 131 collegiate chapters in the United States and Canada.

Lackey says that the addition of a fourth sorority on the Centre campus stemmed from the concerns of women students about the increasing size of the existing three women's groups. Membership in each of the three sororities had climbed above 100, which is larger than preferred by the college and many students. With the addition of one new sorority, the college hopes that each group can keep its membership numbers closer to 75 or less.

The existing sorority chapters at Centre are Delta Delta Delta, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Centre's Greek life coordinator, Carrie Whittier, indicates that Alpha Delta Pi will get underway with a limited recruitment program for upperclass women in November, followed by Centre's formal sorority recruitment period in January.

Centre will provide the group a sorority house for the 2000-2001 school year, chosen from properties already owned by the college.
