Centre College soccer player gets national award

DANVILLE, KY - Centre College junior Tanner Wann was one of 33 soccer players in the nation recently honored as members of the prestigious National Soccer Coaches Association 1999 All-America squad. The NSCA formally presented the All-America players earlier this month in a ceremony held in Baltimore.

Wann, a defensive specialist, was a third-team selection. The honored players were chosen from a pool of over 4,000 soccer players throughout America.

Wann helped the Colonels to a 15-4 record and an NCAA bid.

Two other Centre players, junior Jay Flynn (Somerset) and sophomore Mike Norton (Westchester, Ohio), made the third-team All-Mideast Region. The Mideast Region includes over 100 schools.

Assistant coach Jeb Burch says these three players were the backbone of the Colonels' team. "Wann transferred from Division I power SMU and became the leader of our team. We had a solid defense, and he played a major role in it. Flynn was dedicated to becoming the best player he could be and was named captain of this year's squad. He played on a semi-pro team last summer to get better. Norton has a legitimate chance of becoming an All-American; what we saw this year was a small glimpse of his potential."
